World Teachers’ Day 2024: Teacher Spotlight – Amber Pacey

Amber Pacey has been a teacher at St Mary’s Primary School Ipswich since 2006, and her passion for teaching has been evident from the start. “I decided to become a teacher because I have always had a love of children, especially those who don’t always warm to people easily,” Amber shares.

This ability to connect with children, even those who may be more reserved, has been a driving force in her career. “I am passionate about advocating for children and empowering them to find their voice,” she says.

Amber’s journey into teaching was not only motivated by her natural affinity for children but also by a unique experience of following her father’s footsteps in education.

“I also followed my dad a year behind his education degree, which was a really fun experience. Learning by his side and even getting to work with him a few times was invaluable.”

This early exposure to the world of teaching solidified her decision to pursue a career in education.

Teaching has been Amber’s first and only career, and she can’t imagine doing anything else. “I love seeing students fall in love with learning and building relationships with other teachers and a wide range of students. I love feeling part of the community and connecting with parents.”

For Amber, the most rewarding aspect of her job is knowing that she has the opportunity to make a positive impact on her students’ lives every day. “I strive to be a safe space for my students, creating an environment they love.”

One student, in particular, stands out for Amber’s as a reminder of why she loves teaching.

“This child taught me the many ways I can make an impact, showing that academics aren’t everything and that the whole person being created is vital.”

Amber worked hard to create lessons that engaged the student at their level, using assistive technology and fostering a loving, inclusive environment.

“I look back on my year with this child with pride, knowing I was part of their journey. It’s a true reminder of the blessings that come with the challenges of teaching.”

Amber credits much of her development as a teacher to her mentors over the years. “I have worked alongside some brilliant mentors who walked the talk. I continue to learn from my colleagues, both young and old.”

For those considering a career in teaching, Amber’s advice is clear: “Say yes to the exciting opportunities and keep your eyes open for learning experiences. Create connections everywhere you go and remember that communication is key – and being a lifelong learner is crucial.”
