End of an era as Sister Kathleen retires after 50 years

The last Josephite sister serving in Catholic education in Queensland, Sister Kathleen Mooney, has retired, marking the close of a remarkable 50-year career.

Entering the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart at just 16, she dedicated decades to teaching and leading schools across rural and metropolitan areas before transitioning into counselling. Her work supported many students dealing with grief and loss, trauma and behaviour issues.

“Every day I learn something from the children, every day I see God in my interactions with the children, and every day my faith in God gives meaning to my life.”

Sister Kathleen’s service, guided by the charism of Saint Mary MacKillop—“Never see a need without doing something about it”—leaves a lasting legacy in faith-based learning and student wellbeing.
