New Independent Chair

The Roman Catholic Bishops of Queensland have appointed Brisbane barrister Madeline Brennan KC as the Independent Chair of the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC). 

Ms Brennan will chair the 15-member board which leads the peak body for Catholic education in Queensland. QCEC holds a strategic role in policy development and advocacy on state-wide issues. 

Ms Brennan will take over the role on 1 July 2024.  

Speaking on behalf of the Bishops of Queensland, Bishop Ken Howell said the Commission was fortunate to have Ms Brennan take over the role. 

“Madeline Brennan brings to the Commission deep experience not only in the law but also in a range of government and community organisations including as a past member of the Ethics Committee of the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Mater Health Services board, and All Hallows’ School Council.” 

Bishop Howell also paid tribute to outgoing Chair the Hon. Margaret White AO, who has been in the role since 2018. 

“Margaret White has done an exceptional job leading the Commission and the bishops are deeply grateful for her service over the last six years,” Bishop Ken said. 

“Margaret has brought her insights and wisdom to the Commission ensuring good governance and integrity remain at the heart of the organisation.” 

QCEC Executive Director Allan Blagaich said he looked forward to working with Ms Brennan as the new Chair of the Commission.  

“QCEC will continue to serve Catholic schools across the state under the Commission’s guidance led by Ms Brennan,” Mr Blagaich said.  

“We look forward to the benefits of her insights and experience as we continue to advance Catholic education.”
