Pope Leo XIV has appointed Sydney Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Meagher as the new Bishop of Rockhampton.

Bishop Meagher will succeed Bishop Michael McCarthy, who is retiring after 12 years of episcopal ministry, and becomes the 11th Bishop of Rockhampton.

Catholic Education Queensland Limited CEO Allan Blagaich welcomed the appointment:

“On behalf of Catholic Education Queensland, I congratulate Bishop Meagher on his appointment to lead the Diocese of Rockhampton.”

“Bishop Meagher brings a remarkable depth of experience to this role, from his work in theological formation and seminary leadership to his longstanding commitment to those on the margins. Catholic schools and communities across Central Queensland will be well served by his leadership.”

“We also acknowledge with gratitude the 12 years of service Bishop Michael McCarthy has given to the Diocese of Rockhampton. His long involvement with the Queensland Catholic Education Commission reflects a genuine commitment to Catholic education in Queensland, and his contribution to the sector will not be forgotten.”
